I was never a big fan of lemon balm tea, but one day I went to the supermarket and decided to buy some lemon balm seeds to grow on my balcony (I know, it makes no sense).

At the beginning of popping out from the soil, the plant was so tiny and fragile that I couldn’t tell if I’d made a mistake by planting the wrong seed or not – compared to the photos, it looked like… nothing!

With time, it became bigger and bigger and now it is so big that the plant started to grow in all directions outside the pot, can you imagine?!

This made me think about something else…

When we start something in life, we often feel like it’s a waste of time because we need to start “from zero”. But after growing the lemon balm plant, I realized that, there’s no such thing as zero in this life – so it’s simply impossible to start from zero.

Ironically, zero is one very intimidating number for us, because it means nothing.

So starting from zero could mean “we do not exist” – even if it’s just for 1 second of our lives. Zero is so intimidating as the infinite.

I would even say that they are both equally intimidating.

But infinity is said to not even exist because it is not a number or a real quantity – it is a representation of the continuity or the expansion of reality (whether we are talking about numbers or the universe itself).

In mathematics, zero simply marks the transition from negative to positive numbers, like this:

… -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 …

And if you add the infinity here, you end up having:

-∞ … -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 … +∞

So, in simple terms, we can see that:

  • Zero marks a transition from one state to another:
    • negative to positive
    • positive to negative
  • Infinity gives continuity to those states
    • continuity of negative
    • continuity of positive

So it couldn’t exist zero without infinity, or infinity without zero.

Taking plants as an example:

The seed is the zero stage of the plant, because it’s a state where the plant is not dead nor alive. The plant doesn’t exist yet, at least not in the physical world.

But if you add elements to the seed (like water, sun, nutrients and vitamins) the plant will continue to grow more and more and more, until it produces more seeds.

Although one single plant is not infinite because it can eventually die – before dying, the biology of the plant is designed to produce the seeds to give continuity to a new generation of plants. So, in other terms, the biology of the plant is designed to make it infinite – not in terms of the individual, but in terms of the species.

And this can be applied to every life-form on earth.

If we observe the infinite symbol taking into consideration the life cycles on earth, it is even more clear:

So, in biology, the zero marks the seeds, the embryos, the union between masculine and feminine.

On earth, zero it’s not nothing, it’s simply the continuity of everything – it’s the center of the infinity.

While we are growing, we are counting…

And when you least expect, you become more than you realize you would ever be.

A great topic for discussion. I like the way you represent 0 as a transition point in the infinity continuum. It makes the concept easier to understand. It also makes me think that a plant doesn’t “die”…at least, not entirely. Life continues within the seed, even if the plant remains appear lifeless.
When we “die”…is there an element which continues to exist? What some call the spirit/soul? The physical/visible form certainly appears to look different depending on which stage of the infinity continuum it is…However, the physical and non-physical are still part of all that is…
